Introduction to Astanayika

Bharata, in Natyasastra while introducing various concepts relating to representation, relation and reaction, mentions about the avasta-s, i.e., feelings that a nayika (maiden in love) might undergo due to her situation. The situation here, is with specific relation to her Hero, his deeds, actions or even misdeeds, in the realm of love.

She might be – eager to see or meet him, proud of him, suffering pangs of separation, ready to quarrel or question him, or feeling deceived, or cursing herself for her action or waiting for a husband to come back after his mission or even just daring walk out to meet her lover.

These eight nayikas, rather eight situations, have names. They are known by the following names: Vasakasajja, Swadeenapatika, Virahotkandita, Khandita, Vipralabda, Kalahantarita, Proshitabhartruka and Abhisarika.

It is quite natural that one nayika, changes to another with respect to her surroundings. The shades are also very close that quite often a kalahantarita might look like a Virahotkhandita or a Virahotkandita might look like a Vipralabda. The choreographer or the performer should know the shade, be able to decode from the given lyric and give the best stayi to bring the best out of the given poem.

This intensive workshop for 5 weekends (10days @ 90 mins each session) will give all the required basics with grammar laying the foundation for a rich, layered performance.
